Job Title: Assistant Underwriting Officer

Location: Kampala, Uganda

Job Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will support underwriting, business development, portfolio administration, and client relationship management activities within the Uganda market, consistent with the group’s overall policies & guidelines and in line with the highest standards of client service. The job holder shall report to the Assistant Director – Underwriting & Marketing.

 The main duties of the Assistant Underwriting Officer shall comprise, amongst others, the following:
 
  • Support the acquisition, assessment, and onboarding of cedents, brokers, and other business partners, ensuring compliance with the Corporation's Know Your Customer (KYC) and regulatory requirements. 
  • Review and underwrite facultative reinsurance submissions from the Ugandan market, in consultation with the Resident Underwriter, including risk assessment, pricing, preparation of quotations, negotiation of terms, and management of renewals. The job holder will be expected to contribute to the growth of a profitable facultative portfolio, maintain strong relationships with brokers and cedents, and support business retention and new business generation initiatives.
  • Support treaty underwriting and renewal activities, including the review of underwriting information and statistics submitted by cedents, validation of data completeness and quality, preparation of quotations and renewal analyses, and any other technical tasks assigned by the Resident Underwriter. 
  • Monitor business bound to ensure timely receipt of reinsurance slips, premium closings, and other contractual documentation, and follow up with clients and intermediaries to ensure compliance with agreed premium payment terms and internal procedures.
  • Ensure the accurate and timely processing of contracts, endorsements, amendments, and related transactions within the Corporation's reinsurance administration systems, maintaining high standards of data quality and contract administration. 
  • Prepare and submit production reports, portfolio analyses, management reports, and exception reports as required. The job holder shall ensure strict adherence to established reporting timelines and contribute to the quality and accuracy of management information.
  • Support the implementation of the Corporation's marketing and business development strategy in Uganda through regular client engagement, market visits, relationship management activities, preparation of marketing materials, maintenance of client databases, and coordination of market visit schedules.
  • Assist in the planning, organization, and execution of training seminars, workshops, and other market development initiatives. This includes working closely with the Resident Underwriter and the Nairobi Regional Office to identify market training needs and recommend appropriate capacity-building interventions.
  • Prepare and issue facultative renewal notices in a timely manner and actively follow up with cedents and brokers to secure renewal instructions and maximize retention of profitable business.
  • Work closely with the Finance and Technical Accounting teams to support premium collection efforts, account reconciliations, and follow-up of outstanding balances, with a view to maintaining healthy receivables and strong client account management.
  • Support the administration and processing of retrocession arrangements, including contract processing, premium remittances, and other related activities in accordance with the Corporation's retrocession procedures and controls. 
  • Provide prompt, professional, and customer-focused service to cedents, brokers, and other stakeholders, ensuring compliance with established service standards, turnaround times, and service level commitments.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and well-organized business records, including underwriting files, reinsurance slips, contractual documentation, correspondence, and related records, in accordance with the Corporation's policies on records management, archiving, and document retrieval. 
  • Undertake any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Resident Underwriter, Regional Management, or other authorized officers from time to time in support of the Corporation's objectives.

Competencies And Additional Requirements
  • Strong technical knowledge of insurance and reinsurance business, for multiple classes, including underwriting principles, claims management, treaty and facultative reinsurance arrangements.
  • Good understanding of proportional and non-proportional reinsurance structures, contract wordings, reinsurance principles, and related administrative provisions.
  • Sound knowledge of the Ugandan and/or East African insurance and reinsurance markets, including key market practices, stakeholders, and regulatory considerations.
  • Strong relationship management and business development skills, with the ability to effectively engage brokers, cedents, and other market participants.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, and the ability to interpret and present business information for management decision-making.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, negotiation, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational abilities, with keen attention to detail and the capacity to balance operational accuracy with commercial objectives.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and consistently deliver high-quality outputs within demanding deadlines and established service standards.
  • Ability to perform effectively in a high-performance, diverse, and multicultural working environment.
  • Practical experience with reinsurance administration systems, including SICS (DXC Technologies), and knowledge of reinsurance claims recoveries will be an added advantage.

Qualifications And Experience:
Applicants should possess:
 
  • A university degree in a relevant discipline, with a minimum of five (5) years' practical experience in the insurance/reinsurance sector.
  • Relevant experience in direct or reinsurance underwriting or in the reinsurance department of an insurance company.
  • Professional insurance qualifications such as ACII, or equivalent, will be a distinct advantage.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • Working knowledge of French will be an added advantage.

The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package, including:
 
  • Competitive basic salary on the Corporation’s Support Staff Grade Level
